Future Engineering: Creative Solutions for a Better Tomorrow

Future Engineering is an immersive and educational workshop designed to empower the leaders of tomorrow to embrace a futurist mindset and use storytelling and worldbuilding exercises to design positive futures. This workshop is a sandbox for experimentation, play, and exploration, where participants can unleash their imagination.

We begin by exploring what it means to have a futurist mindset, understanding its importance in addressing today's challenges. We'll dive into pressing global issues such as climate change, inequality, and technological bias, setting the stage for creative problem-solving.

Participants will then form groups based on their passions and interests. Guided by worldbuilding exercises, each group will create an imagined future. These futures can range from far-out worlds where buildings are shaped like trees to underwater cities with houses made of coral. The only limit is imagination.

Using a range of AI tools, we'll bring these envisioned futures to life, creating stunning visual artifacts that participants can take home. These artifacts will serve as tangible reminders of their imagined futures and inspire them to integrate these visions into their everyday lives.

Together, we will explore the positive and negative implications of emerging technologies, investigating their place in creating a future free of bias and in harmony with nature. Participants will reflect on their creations, identifying actionable steps to bring elements of their imagined futures into the present. They will learn how to use their humanity and creativity to drive meaningful change now.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • There is engineering in everything. Even art is engineering. No matter your professional background, I can assure you that you have at least one thing in common with an engineer: the ability to solve problems. Right now, we need to use our imagination to creatively address the biggest problems of our time. That’s why it’s important to think like a futurist and use your creativity to engineer a positive future.

  • The length of this workshop can be flexible, between less than one hour to three hours or more. Longer ones have more exercises and group discussions. No matter the length, everyone will create a vision for the future and see that vision come to life with generative AI.

  • People in STEM or related fields. This is great for students – kids as young as 8 years old. As well as educators from any adult age group. It is slightly different and tailored to each age group. However, we love seeing how visions for the future compare across all demographics, with a special emphasis on diverse backgrounds and historically marginalized communities.

  • I have administered this workshop in a variety of forms since 2021. Overall, I have surveyed over 600 people from ages 7-89 about what they imagine the future to look like. My goal is to build an interactive database of people’s visions from the future from all over the globe. Together, we can reimagine the future, one workshop at a time.
